The Stadthuys: Town Hall

The Stadthuys, Malacca (Jalan Kota, 75000 Malacca, Malaysia) is located at the bottom of St Paul’s Hill. The four storey maroon building stands distinctly as the landmark of Malacca, covering an area of 49,200 square feet. This charming building is built in the 1650s by the Dutch as their Municipal city hall and Governors residence. The building is a replicate of the classic old town halls in Netherlands. The building and surrounding area are also commonly known as the Dutch Square or the Red Square. The building is the oldest Dutch building in the East.The building is converted into a History and Ethnography Museum in 1982. You will be able to learn about the history of Malacca during the Malacca Sultanate times, the Portuguese rule, the Dutch rule through to the British government. Also, you will also learn about the various communities living in Malacca in the present day. The communities include the Malays, the Chinese, the Indians, the Portuguese, the Baba and Nyonya communities among others. Through the exhibits, pictures and paintings, you will be able to learn about the history of Malacca from the 1400s to 1957, the year Malacca gain independence.The building is converted into a History and Ethnography Museum in 1982.
